Artwork

A portfolio of decorative, engaging, and vibrant artworks that capture the beauty of life. Created to add dynamism and personality to the rooms they will inhabit.

The idea to incorporate pattern into my compositions was born out of my interest in Dutch wax prints also known as ankara fabrics, and the link to the designs I had doodled across my journals as a young child.

I first experimented with incorporating the pattern by taking pictures of the ankara fabric that my parents had in their wardrobe and using transfer paper to mount the designs onto the canvas. However, I soon found that by creating handmade stencils using the paper cutting skills I had acquired; then spray painting these designs onto the canvas I was able to create compositions that were vibrant and dynamic.

Each portrait has a unique combination of designs incorporated into the composition creating a truly unique piece of artwork.

Reveal Yourself

This series was born out of the idea to include multiple perspectives of the face or emotions on one canvas. However, as the years have progressed a deeper meaning has been revealed (pun intended).

These portraits allude to the part of ourselves that wants to remain hidden from outside influence and other people's perception or judgement of who we really are. The perception of facial features is known to be an important part of social cognition, that is said to help people understand each other's identity, what they are feeling, how one can anticipate actions and recognise their emotions. By leaving parts of the face abstracted i chose to protect the figures true nature from the viewer. But it is human nature to seek people who are open about who they are and stand firm in that because it allows us to find the characteristics that we can relate to, thus creating a sense of “closeness” to that person. We want people to reveal themselves to us and we crave that closeness hence the title “Reveal Yourself”.
